Inland to Coast is an advanced fourth and fifth year research studio at the University of Patras, Department of Architecture. Through a research process of recording and mapping, comparative analysis, contextualization and synthesizing of data, participants are challenged to articulate proposals that question how the Athenian landlocked urban condition meets, relates, contrasts or transforms the Attica coastal condition through narratives, visions, physical constructs.
The Fall 2016-17 studio research was triggered between October 13-15, 2016, with the three day flow workshop, in collaboration with the Design Academy Eindhoven and the City Circles initiative. Launched by Irene Fortuyn and KETTER&Co, City Circles is a design-driven research tool and methodology aiming to disclose and unveil ways of recording and responding to urban contexts. During the flow workshop, the New City of Athens’ Gallery constituted the centre of a notional circle with an inner diameter of one kilometer. Eight teams, formed by local (= UP students) and non-local (= DAE students) explorers, developed their own definitions of flow which in combination with each team’s shared interest guided the team’s in-situ research inquiry and documentation, public performance but also the research projects’ development within a larger territory and context of investigation.
