Six days a week Foucault’s theory of heterotopias gets materialized in the municipality of Athens, in the form of 44 street markets. Like a 17th century dutch commercial fleet, those markets move through the roads of the city, bringing goods that the city can not produce itself. Occupying a street each time merchants transform a grey area passage of our built environment into a vivid “garden of wonders” where people come together to buy fresh products for the ongoing week as well as to socialize. Focused on history, morphology, frequency and topography, the present research is trying to decipher that weekly phenomenon.

The flow of an evolving city is inseparable with the water flow of its rivers. This project narrates the development of a big city, in this case Athens, tracing its flow, through the transformations of its rivers and streams. In ancient Greece, rivers were respected and worshiped as Gods, due to the water scarcity. For this reason the economy was based, apart from the commerce, to stock raising also. Philosophers and scientists valued notably the walks next to the fluvial routes, as places to think and concentrate. However, this phenomenon changed through time as civilians neglected nature and turned to industrialization. Urbanization, as long as war impacts, became the reasons why the city polluted its rivers and turned them into drainage system. The fluvial network of Athens was greatly decreased, when the city started to expand rapidly and the urban grid reached the streams' riverbeds. Even now, in extreme conditions the natural topology takes over the city and the once covered streams by streets, become fluvial routes again. Thus, the output of this research is four (4) fluvial intersections of the current condition, that consist the initiate of a vertical scanning of Athens, to reveal its stories formatted from the exact space and time. This catalog aims to pose the question in the urban design of Athens, of what comes next to the flow of evolution of this city and is implied the importance of small scale interventions.

The interpretation of the word “flow” could be defined as collaborative happenings that constitute a process. Seeking after the word’s origin throughout the centuries, the word derived from the Proto-Indo-European plōw with its roots to the Hellenic plѐō (πλέω) which means “to float”.Flow can take many shapes and meanings with either a natural or theoretical approach of definition. Taking into consideration the primal-Hellenic meaning of “flow” and then placing it on the context of the Athenian cityscape, a question occurs. What flows/floats in Athens?A floative process that has been always developed in the city of Athens is the long-lasting practice of a procession. Athenian processions are being detected through a wide spectrum of time until nowadays and are combined with both traditions and contemporary issues of all the social classes. Dominant purpose of this research will be the recording, the analysis and the elucidation of Athenian processions.

The initial research, which took place within the circle of Metaxourgeion, reformed into a recording of sounds in the team’s four cross-sectioned chosen roads, from 11 a.m to 1 a.m. The chosen research field was critical as these roads are the conceivable limits between the different city zones, with interesting changing sound densities from day to night. Following a zoom out procedure, we decided to expand our recording sessions in other urban circles of Attica, creating a network in which Iera Odos road is the common denominator. At the same time, we maintain the idea of conflicting roads and sound flows with the produced sounds consisting our basic tool in which we attempt to create our Attica SoundAtlas. The historic character of Iera Odos is of great importance to our research, whose main goal is to reconnect the past with today’s reality. In this framework, we choose 9 historic spots upon Iera Odos and through a combination of the city’s sounds and the narrative of Pausanias we try to bring the wanderer in touch with the urban past by observing the -since that time- unnoticed. A visual, narrative and acoustic interpretation of the past. A contradiction between the harsh reality and the forgotten glory.

I perceive flow as a continuous action, phenomenon, situation. Thinking through it, isn’t the repetition of the disturbance of a flow, a flow itself?
Roads are the main traffic flow of a city, whether it concerns pedestrians or vehicles. But still in this well-oiled system we can observe breaks of the flow. Studying this, I became interested in the radical break points of the roads, the dead ends. Around Athens, we find different formations of these dead ends. Aim of the study is to enlist&#38;nbsp;

the different cases of dead ends, and describe their characteristics, and the reasons they are formed in the way they are, beginning from Attica and zooming in, in different parts of Athens such as Eleonas, the historic center, and more.

Considering the urban space as the place where the action-reaction system between people takes place, the urban space is not far from being identified with the place of encounter, superposition and conflict in the city. These conditions seem more intense and transitional in the city corners, the crossroads. The street corners concentrate the activity, the image of the entire area and express the nature of the city as a meeting place, a place of social interchange. The crossroads affect man’s experience, make him seek his own space relative to the others and finally reveal the city to its citizens. In global scale and relations, crossroads become the places of culture, communication and exchange. Taking the exhibition Cities, Corners by M. de Sola Morales into consideration, crossroads are categorized and perceived as buildings-points, interacting fields, nodes and finally networks in the cities. The project aims to define and represent crossroads in Athens, focusing on the Hilton area since it constitutes a distinctive district in the city but can also be fitted on all categories.

When does the flow of an object end? The flow of materiality does not stop in the trash bin. Objects can change users and form before ending up in the landfill. During this process the material flow interacts with others, both social and economical.Today's massive waste production has a lot to do with our over consuming way of life. The more we buy the more waste we produce. Furthermore the need of constant technological update ends the life of many devices before their utilitarian death. However "trash" does not belong to us and it does not have to do with us in any way. The landfill is a remote endless dystopian place away from our everyday life. Our intention is to create a framework of waste management of Attica throughout different scales. Using the neighborhood of Metaxourgeio as an example base, we identify 4 types of public spaces. These places will host the acts of sorting waste and exchanging objects according to a time based system. In this way "discarding trash" transforms into an environment friendly social act through the city center.In a larger scale sorted waste will be driven to the coastal industries of Elefsina. A network between some new infrastructure of waste processing and the existing infrastructure will be created. The products of this network will feed back the city center, weakening the flow of waste that gets buried in Fyli landfill. As a result we activate a material flow between Athens and the coast of Attica.

Considering flow as a continuous process that links different points of reference, it could be illustrated as a route. The most ancient and significant routes in Greek history are the commercial ones, through which Greek civilization achieved to spread its reputation and influence to the whole area of Mediterranean Sea. Focusing on Piraeus, Athens' courtesy and commercial port, the research tries to visualize the trading impact of Athens in the International Markets, during the years by analyzing the past glory, the existent conditions, and the future scenarios. What occurs by this analysis is the significance of Piraeus, as a mediator between East and West and a connector that links flows from Asia to Europe. Considering the geopolitical site of Greece as well as the advantageous relations with both East and West world, the project will attempt to demonstrate Piraeus existent importance, and its potential for further advances. The Greek capital can play the role of a node in today’s trading and cultural exchange and a constructor of new commercial networks of exchange.

Flow. Graffitis. Considering Athens as a white canvas this research is trying to portray how graffitis can be a basic expression element in the city, which while playing with the words and the layers can create a flow involving every citizen, active or passive.Inspired by the flow analysis and moving into a new level, this project is trying to record all these layers of intervention in city’s vertical elements, as the walls, focusing on the materiality of them, using the section as a basic research tool. Furthermore, its point is to analyse the translation of these vertical elements as boundaries that may stop one flow to create another.
